NHL season is back, Yankees shut out Red Sox, NBA reviews Las Vegas expansion bids

The NHL is back!

This is The Sports Reset for Wednesday September 30th

In the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens opened with a 3 to 2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Zachary Bolduc scored the second-period winner, Jakub Dobes made 26 saves, and Montreal spoiled Gavin McKenna’s debut despite two William Nylander goals. The Florida Panthers beat the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes 1 to 0 in overtime when Gustav Forsling scored with 4.3 seconds left. The Vancouver Canucks edged the Edmonton Oilers 6 to 5 in overtime, the Boston Bruins blanked the New York Rangers 3 to 0, and Jack Eichel had a goal and two assists as the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5 to 2. In the MLB wild-card round, Ben Rice homered twice and drove in six as the New York Yankees shut out the Boston Red Sox 9 to 0. Fernando Tatis Jr. homered on the first pitch and Michael King carried a no-hitter into the seventh as the San Diego Padres beat the Chicago Cubs 8 to 0.

Looking ahead, all four MLB wild-card series return Wednesday with elimination on the line. The Yankees can advance to face the Tampa Bay Rays in the Division Series, with Max Fried opposing former Yankee Sonny Gray. The Padres can close out the Cubs, while the Atlanta Braves host the Philadelphia Phillies after Austin Riley’s late three-run homer decided Game 1. The Chicago White Sox can eliminate the Houston Astros, who counter with Hunter Brown against Sean Burke. In the NHL, the New York Islanders visit the Maple Leafs, the Pittsburgh Penguins open against the Philadelphia Flyers, and the Los Angeles Kings meet the Colorado Avalanche. Beyond the scoreboard, the NBA is reviewing three finalist groups for a Las Vegas expansion team, with Canadian Steve Apostolopoulos among the bidders and the franchise-plus-arena package expected to cost 12 to 13 billion dollars.
