The Jays playoff dream ends, Maple Leafs sweep the Senators, Canadians chase Presidents Cup upset
The Jays playoff dream ends!
This is The Sports Reset for Thursday September 24th
In MLB, the Jays lost both ends of their doubleheader to the Baltimore Orioles, 4 to 2 in Game 1 and 4 to 2 again in Game 2, ending Toronto’s playoff hopes one year after a World Series appearance. Pete Alonso hit his 41st homer, a two-run shot, while Chris Bassitt carried a shutout into the sixth inning of the opener. Rookie Trey Gibson struck out seven in the nightcap, when Christian Encarnacion-Strand homered and drove in three. In NHL preseason play, the Toronto Maple Leafs swept the Ottawa Senators’ split squads, winning 6 to 1 in Toronto and 4 to 2 in Ottawa; Auston Matthews and John Tavares each had three points in the home victory. Back in MLB, Manny Machado drove in three as the San Diego Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5 to 1, Sonny Gray earned his major-league-leading 18th win as the Boston Red Sox edged the Cleveland Guardians 1 to 0, and the Milwaukee Brewers delayed the Philadelphia Phillies’ playoff clinch with a 4 to 1 victory.
Looking ahead, PGA golf’s Presidents Cup begins Thursday at Medinah and runs through Sunday, with Canadians Corey Conners and Nick Taylor on an International team trying to stop an American side that owns a 13-1-1 series record. In the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons visit the Green Bay Packers as quarterback Michael Penix Jr. makes his season debut, his first appearance since tearing his ACL last November. The NHL preseason schedule includes the Edmonton Oilers at the Vancouver Canucks and the Calgary Flames at the Seattle Kraken. In MLB, the Padres and Dodgers meet again, while the Phillies face the Brewers with a playoff berth still available. Beyond the scoreboard, the NHL Board of Governors elected Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis as chairman and Flames owner Murray Edwards as vice-chair, giving Canadian clubs representation at the top of league governance.
