The Milwaukee Brewers secured a fourth straight NL Central title after beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 to 1, then watching the Atlanta Braves defeat the Chicago Cubs 6 to 3. Jacob Misiorowski struck out seven over five scoreless innings, lowering his major-league-best ERA to 1.89, while Joey Ortiz and Luis Lara drove in two runs apiece. Elsewhere in MLB, Spencer Torkelson’s three-run homer powered the Detroit Tigers past the Jays 10 to 1, leaving the Jays two games behind the final American League wild-card position. Brayan Rocchio’s two-run, ninth-inning double gave the Cleveland Guardians a 7 to 6 walk-off win over the Chicago White Sox, while the Texas Rangers moved ahead of the Jays by beating the Boston Red Sox 4 to 2. Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed one hit over seven innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers shut out the Cincinnati Reds 4 to 0, reducing their NL West magic number to two. In UFC action, Tyshawn Williams defeated Antonio Monteiro by decision at featherweight.
Looking ahead in MLB, the Jays send Max Scherzer against Keider Montero as they try to avoid a sweep by the Tigers and regain ground in the wild-card race. The Guardians meet the White Sox again with their two-game advantage over the Jays on the line, while the Rangers host the Red Sox. The Brewers continue against the Pirates with the division secured but the majors’ best record still in play, and the Dodgers can move closer to the NL West crown against the Reds. On Friday, the Jays open an important series against the Rangers, with Dylan Cease moved up to start after Toronto’s bullpen-heavy Tuesday disrupted its pitching plans. Beyond the scoreboard, the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks named 21-year-old Connor Bedard their captain, making him the second-youngest captain in franchise history.
