In MLB, the Jays fell 6 to 5 to the Detroit Tigers when Louis Varland missed Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s throw at first, allowing Zach McKinstry to score in the ninth. Kazuma Okamoto had put the Jays ahead with his 33rd homer. The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds 4 to 1 and clinched a 14th straight playoff trip, tying the MLB record. The New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 8 to 3 to clinch a postseason berth as Aaron Judge hit a three-run homer in a six-run eighth. The Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 7 to 3 after Tristan Peters’ 18-pitch walk sparked a six-run sixth.
Looking ahead, Tuesday’s MLB schedule sends the Jays straight back against the Detroit Tigers at Rogers Centre. The Jays are one game behind the Cleveland Guardians for the final American League wild-card spot, putting extra weight on correcting Monday’s late defensive mistake. The Chicago White Sox also visit Cleveland in a first-place AL Central contest after the Guardians missed a chance to overtake Chicago. The Los Angeles Dodgers continue at the Cincinnati Reds while chasing a fifth straight NL West title, and the New York Yankees meet the Minnesota Twins again after securing at least a wild-card berth. Off the court, the Raptors made Kawhi Leonard’s return official, sending Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, two second-rounders and a pick swap to the Los Angeles Clippers.
