This is The Sports Reset for Friday September 11th
In WTA tennis at the US Open, Aryna Sabalenka advanced to her fourth straight final and eliminated Jessica Pegula in straight sets. The two-time defending champion won eight of the last nine points in the opening set, struck 29 winners and extended her tournament winning streak to 19 matches. In the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers beat the Los Angeles Rams 27 to 7 in Melbourne. Brock Purdy threw touchdowns to Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel Sr. and Demarcus Robinson, while San Francisco’s defence delivered a goal-line stand in Australia’s first regular-season NFL game. In MLB, the New York Yankees beat the Colorado Rockies 10 to 3 as Anthony Volpe returned to the majors with a grand slam and a career-high five RBIs. In ATP tennis, Alexander Zverev eliminated Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets to reach the US Open semifinals.
Looking ahead, WTA tennis has its US Open final set for Saturday after Elena Rybakina rallied past Coco Gauff in three sets earlier today. Rybakina, guaranteed to take over No. 1 next week, meets Sabalenka, whose 19-match New York winning streak and shot at a third straight title are on the line. In LPGA golf, the Solheim Cup begins today in the Netherlands and runs through Sunday, with Nelly Korda leading a United States team trying to retain the trophy; Europe has not lost on home soil since 2015. In MLB, the Jays open a three-game home series against the Baltimore Orioles today. Forty per cent of Toronto’s remaining schedule is against Baltimore, with the Jays one game out of the final American League wild-card spot and the Orioles two games behind Toronto. The New York Mets also visit the Yankees. Beyond the scoreboard, federal prosecutors have reportedly opened a criminal investigation into allegations that the Los Angeles Clippers circumvented the NBA salary cap to pay Kawhi Leonard.
