Edmonton owns Labour Day, Jays fall on walk-off single, Ohtani shuts down pitching
Edmonton owns Labour Day!
This is The Sports Reset for Tuesday September 8th
The Edmonton Elks erased an 18-point deficit and beat the Calgary Stampeders 38 to 28 in the CFL. Justin Rankin’s 50-yard touchdown run put Edmonton ahead with just over four minutes left, part of a 24-point fourth quarter that kept the Elks atop the West Division at 9 and 3. The Toronto Argonauts also won 37 to 22 over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who lost quarterback Tre Ford after he suffered an upper-body injury following a 23-yard touchdown run. In MLB, the Jays rallied late but fell 6 to 5 to the Athletics on Jeff McNeil’s bases-loaded walk-off single. Andrés Giménez had tied it with a ninth-inning homer, but the loss left Toronto one game behind the Cleveland Guardians for the final American League wild-card spot.
Looking ahead, the Jays get another shot at the Athletics with José Soriano slated to start, and every game carries extra weight with Toronto chasing Cleveland and preparing to host the Baltimore Orioles this weekend. Elsewhere in MLB, the Houston Astros visit the Philadelphia Phillies in a meeting of playoff contenders, with Houston entering at 73 and 71 while Philadelphia sits at 81 and 63. The Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers also continue their divisional series after Milwaukee scored three times in the eighth inning Monday. The NFL season opens Wednesday with the New England Patriots visiting the Seattle Seahawks in a Super Bowl rematch, then Thursday brings the first regular-season game in Australia as the San Francisco 49ers face the Los Angeles Rams. The Elks and Stampeders meet again Saturday in Edmonton. Beyond the scoreboard, Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani says he will focus only on hitting for the rest of the season after lingering knee and biceps soreness kept him off the mound.
