In Formula 1, Kimi Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix, with George Russell second and Max Verstappen third. The Mercedes driver surged from 19th on the grid, used fresh medium tires after a lap-29 pit stop, then passed Russell on lap 50. Antonelli became the first Italian in 60 years to win at Monza and stretched his championship lead to 66 points. In the CFL, the Saskatchewan Roughriders beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 32 to 26 in overtime. Tommy Stevens scored his third touchdown on Saskatchewan’s opening overtime possession, and the Roughriders ended Winnipeg’s reply on third-and-six. In MLB, The Jays lost 6 to 1 to the Kansas City Royals. Vinnie Pasquantino hit a three-run homer, Salvador Perez added a two-run shot, and Toronto slipped one game behind Cleveland for the final American League wild-card spot.
Looking ahead, the CFL’s West-leading Edmonton Elks visit the Calgary Stampeders for the Labour Day rivalry game. In MLB, The Jays open a three-game series against the Athletics with Dylan Cease lined up to start, carrying a 2.25 ERA into a game with direct wild-card implications. Later this week, the NFL season opens Thursday when the New England Patriots visit the Seattle Seahawks in a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl. Beyond the scoreboard, NFL owners have extended commissioner Roger Goodell through the 2030 season, with more than 95 per cent of his compensation tied to performance measures.
