Parnasse lands a dream debut!
This is The Sports Reset for Sunday September 6th
In UFC, Salahdine Parnasse defeated Dan Hooker in the Paris main event, finishing him 2:35 into the first round of his promotional debut. The French lightweight hurt Hooker with a body kick, then ended it with a head kick and left hand, extending his winning streak to six. In MLB, the Jays edged the Kansas City Royals 4 to 3 as Kazuma Okamoto collected four hits and Toronto’s bullpen protected a one-run lead. The Jays moved into the final American League wild-card spot at 72-and-71, helped by the Detroit Tigers shutting out the Cleveland Guardians 6 to 0.
Looking ahead, Formula 1 takes over Monza for the Italian Grand Prix, with Pierre Gasly starting from his first career pole after beating George Russell by six-hundredths of a second in qualifying. Gasly’s only previous F1 victory also came at Monza, back in 2020. In MLB, the Jays close their series against the Royals carrying a four-game winning streak and control of the wild-card tiebreaker over Cleveland. In the CFL, the 6-and-5 Winnipeg Blue Bombers visit the 7-and-4 Saskatchewan Roughriders, with Trevor Harris bringing 3,531 passing yards into the Labour Day rivalry game. Later this week, the NFL season opens Wednesday with a Super Bowl rematch between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, followed Thursday by the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams playing the league’s first regular-season game in Australia. Beyond the scoreboard, UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko has vacated her title because injuries could sideline her for a year, setting up Natalia Silva against Wang Cong for the vacant belt at UFC 332.
