Jays climb back to even, Rocchio makes MLB history, Ohtani battles multiple injuries
Jays climb back to even!
This is The Sports Reset for Saturday September 5th
In MLB, the Jays returned to .500 with a 9 to 2 win over the Kansas City Royals. Alejandro Kirk, Ernie Clement and George Springer each drove in two runs, while the Jays scored four in the first inning. Jameson Taillon’s comeback from forearm tendinitis lasted only two innings before right-elbow discomfort forced him out, but four relievers held Kansas City to one run over the final seven. The Cleveland Guardians swept the Detroit Tigers in a doubleheader, 7 to 6 in the opener and 4 to 3 in Game 2. Brayan Rocchio erased a five-run deficit with a tying grand slam, then hit a walk-off homer in the ninth, becoming the sixth player in MLB history to do both in one game. In the CFL, the Montreal Alouettes beat the BC Lions 37 to 30, ending the Lions’ five-game winning streak.
Looking ahead, in MLB, the Jays face the Royals again, with Max Scherzer taking on Seth Lugo after the Jays won six of seven and reached .500 for the first time since June. The Guardians and Tigers continue their series after Cleveland strengthened its hold on the final American League wild-card spot. The Atlanta Braves carry a five-game NL East lead into another meeting with the Philadelphia Phillies, with Martín Pérez opposing Zack Wheeler. The New York Yankees and San Diego Padres also meet again after Luis Campusano’s extra-inning walk-off homer Friday. Beyond the scoreboard, Shohei Ohtani missed a second straight Los Angeles Dodgers game as right-biceps, neck and left-knee trouble began affecting his hitting, with manager Dave Roberts hopeful, but not confident, that he can avoid the injured list.
