In MLB, the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 17 to 3 at Wrigley Field, and the score was only part of it. Alex Bregman hit three of Chicago’s nine home runs, while Seiya Suzuki, Michael Conforto, Tyrone Taylor, Nico Hoerner, Carson Kelly and Matt Shaw also went deep. The Cubs became only the fifth team in MLB history with nine homers in one game, tied the National League record and finished August with an NL-record 62. The Boston Red Sox also rallied past the Seattle Mariners 9 to 8 in 10 innings. Trevor Story delivered the winning single after Seattle intentionally walked two batters to load the bases, while Randy Arozarena had four hits and four RBIs for the Mariners, whose losing streak reached five.
Looking ahead, in MLB, the Jays open an important series at the Cleveland Guardians. Cleveland is only one-and-a-half games ahead of Toronto for the third and final American League wild-card spot, and expanded September rosters give manager John Schneider two extra places to work with. The Cubs and Brewers meet again at Wrigley Field, while the Red Sox host the Mariners at Fenway Park. The New York Yankees visit the Los Angeles Angels, and the St. Louis Cardinals open a series at the Los Angeles Dodgers. Beyond the scoreboard, Lionel Messi has retired from Argentina duty at 39, closing a 207-appearance, 125-goal international career that included the 2022 World Cup and two Copa America titles.
