Alex Apodaca delivered one of the year’s wildest MMA upsets Tuesday. In UFC, Apodaca beat Bella Mir by unanimous decision in the women’s bantamweight main event, even though Mir entered as roughly a 60-to-1 favourite. Apodaca outlanded her 48 to 30 in significant strikes, held Mir to one successful takedown on six attempts, and earned a UFC contract while handing the 23-year-old her first professional loss. In MLB, the Kansas City Royals beat the Jays 5 to 3 after Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s sixth-inning throwing error brought home the go-ahead run. The Astros and Yankees continue in the Bronx, while the Los Angeles Dodgers visit the Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates face the San Diego Padres. Pirates ace Paul Skenes gives that last game extra interest after six scoreless innings Tuesday, while Oneil Cruz took star closer Mason Miller deep for the only run, Miller’s first homer allowed this season. In tennis, the US Open singles main draw begins Sunday, with Carlos Alcaraz returning as the defending men’s champion and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner sidelined by a right knee injury. Beyond the scoreboard, in NFL news, New York Giants receiver Calvin Austin III was carted off Tuesday with an apparent right knee injury, clouding a receiver battle that already includes Malik Nabers’ ACL recovery and Odell Beckham Jr.’s push for a roster spot.
