In MLB, the Texas Rangers beat the Washington Nationals 2 to 0. Jacob deGrom struck out 10 and allowed one hit over six innings, becoming the fastest right-handed pitcher to reach 2,000 career strikeouts when Abimelec Ortiz swung through a slider. The Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5 to 1, with Daz Cameron launching a 442-foot home run, his first for Toronto. In NFL preseason play, the Las Vegas Raiders edged the Houston Texans 22 to 20 on Aidan O’Connell’s one-yard touchdown with 14 seconds left. Raiders rookie Fernando Mendoza earlier had an interception returned 80 yards for a touchdown by Wade Woodaz. The San Francisco 49ers beat the Los Angeles Chargers 41 to 17, helped by Jacob Cowing’s 83-yard punt-return touchdown. In the CFL, the Montreal Alouettes beat the Ottawa Redblacks 46 to 16.
Looking ahead, in MLB, the Jays visit the New York Yankees with Toronto one game outside the final American League wild-card place and New York holding the first wild card. In PGA golf, Friday’s second round of the BMW Championship begins with Gary Woodland, Wyndham Clark and Rory McIlroy tied at six under, and the tournament runs through Sunday. In the LPGA, Miyu Yamashita carries a one-shot CPKC Women’s Open lead over Nasa Hataoka into the second round, with Kiara Romero two shots back. In NFL preseason action, Geno Smith is expected to make his Jets debut when the New York Jets visit the Pittsburgh Steelers after a sore ankle kept him out of their opener. In the CFL, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers visit the Edmonton Elks. Beyond the scoreboard, Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta is being held out with a hip injury that coach Dan Campbell hopes will not linger into the regular season.
