Jays rally falls short!
This is The Sports Reset for Thursday August 20th
In MLB, the Tampa Bay Rays held off the Jays 7 to 6. Toronto rallied from six runs down, with Alejandro Kirk homering and Charles McAdoo collecting a career-high three hits, but Bryan Baker retired the final three batters for his major-league-leading 36th save. Jesús Sánchez also lost two fly balls beneath the Tropicana Field roof, including Richie Palacios’s two-run double. The New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 5 to 3 after Pete Alonso’s potential go-ahead homer in the seventh was ruled foul following review. Alonso struck out, and the loss left Baltimore one-and-a-half games outside the final American League wild-card spot.
Looking ahead, in MLB, the Jays finish their series with the Rays as Shane Bieber faces Ian Seymour. Bieber enters 4 and 2, while Seymour is 9 and 3. Jacob deGrom starts for the Texas Rangers against the Washington Nationals needing two strikeouts to reach 2,000 for his career. On the LPGA Tour, defending champion Brooke Henderson leads the Canadian interest as the CPKC Women’s Open begins at Royal Mayfair in Edmonton. On the PGA Tour, Justin Thomas, Sahith Theegala and Sepp Straka headline the opening BMW Championship standings. In the CFL, the Ottawa Redblacks visit the Montreal Alouettes. In NFL preseason action, the Las Vegas Raiders meet the Houston Texans, while the San Francisco 49ers visit the Los Angeles Chargers. Beyond the scoreboard, in the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers acquired Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets in a five-team deal and signed the breakout forward to a four-year, 88 million dollar contract, while the Los Angeles Clippers landed Max Strus.
