Makhachev keeps the belt!

This is The Sports Reset for Sunday August 16th

In UFC, Islam Makhachev retained the welterweight title by decision over Ian Machado Garry in the UFC 330 main event. It was Makhachev’s first defence after moving up from lightweight and winning the 170-pound belt last fall, and he entered the night on a 16-fight UFC winning streak. Mackenzie Dern also retained the strawweight title, defeating Canadian Gillian Robertson by takedown. In MLB, the Jays beat the New York Yankees 4 to 1 at Rogers Centre. In CFL action, the Edmonton Elks rolled past the Toronto Argonauts 42 to 12, while the Hamilton Tiger-Cats beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 26 to 19. In NFL preseason play, the Baltimore Ravens handled the Philadelphia Eagles 24 to 7.

Looking ahead, Scottie Scheffler carries a two-shot lead into the final round of the PGA’s FedEx St. Jude Championship at 13 under, with Sam Burns and Sungjae Im tied behind him. The world number one has responded strongly after his streak of 78 consecutive made cuts ended at the Scottish Open in July. On the LPGA Tour, Sophia Schubert and Arpichaya Yubol share the Portland Classic lead at 16 under, two ahead of Jeeno Thitikul. In MLB, the Jays and New York Yankees finish their Rogers Centre series after Toronto’s win Saturday, while the Milwaukee Brewers meet the Los Angeles Dodgers again following Milwaukee’s 4 to 1 victory. The FedEx Cup playoffs continue Thursday with the BMW Championship at Bellerive.
