Spain moves on, Sinner sweeps Djokovic, Peters hits for cycle ... and more for July 11th

Spain moves on!

This is The Sports Reset for Saturday, July 11th.

In the World Cup quarterfinals, Spain advanced and Belgium went out after a 2 to 1 finish at SoFi Stadium. Mikel Merino scored late after Fabian Ruiz had opened it, and Belgium leveled before halftime. Spain had not conceded in the tournament before that equalizer and now set up a semifinal with France.

At Wimbledon, Jannik Sinner beat Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, saving his only break point with an ace and moving into Sunday’s final against Alexander Zverev, who ended Arthur Fery’s run 7-6, 6-2, 6-4.

In MLB, the Jays beat the San Diego Padres 5 to 3, while Canadian rookie Tristan Peters hit for the cycle as the Chicago White Sox beat the Athletics 14 to 1. In the CFL, the Edmonton Elks beat the Ottawa Redblacks 40 to 17.

Looking ahead, the World Cup quarterfinals continue today with England against Norway at Hard Rock Stadium and Switzerland against Argentina at Arrowhead, with two more semifinal spots on the line.

At Wimbledon, Karolina Muchova meets Linda Noskova in the women’s final, and the men’s final is set for Sunday, with defending champion Sinner facing Zverev, who is chasing a second straight major after winning Roland Garros.

In MLB, the Jays are back in San Diego against the Padres, while the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates make up Friday’s rainout as part of a doubleheader at PNC Park.

Golf keeps building into the weekend too: Jordan Smith, Rory McIlroy, and Tom Kim share the Scottish Open lead at 9-under, Lucas Glover leads the ISCO Championship at 13-under, and Haeran Ryu starts the next Evian Championship round at 15-under.

In the CFL, Calgary visits Montreal today.
