Jays take the opener, Astros rally in ninth, Scheffler shoots record 61, Los Angeles Lakers sale agreed ... and more for August 15th
Jays take the opener!
This is The Sports Reset for Saturday August 15th
In MLB, the Jays beat the New York Yankees 3 to 1 at Rogers Centre. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. scored the tying run during a chaotic sixth-inning play before leaving after Ryan McMahon’s knee caught him in the head, and Toronto moved ahead moments later. The win opened an important division series, though Guerrero’s health now becomes the immediate concern. The Houston Astros also rallied for five runs in the ninth to beat the Seattle Mariners 10 to 7, finished by Christian Walker’s walk-off three-run homer. In the CFL, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers handled the Ottawa Redblacks 33 to 21. In NFL preseason action, the Denver Broncos beat the Atlanta Falcons 27 to 7, with rookie Jahdae Barron returning a tipped pass 98 yards for a touchdown.
Looking ahead, Scottie Scheffler takes a three-shot PGA Tour lead into the third round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship at 11 under. Scheffler birdied his first five holes Friday, made 11 birdies overall and tied the TPC Southwind course record with a 61. Viktor Hovland and Sungjae Im are tied for second at eight under, with the top 50 in the playoff standings advancing to Thursday’s BMW Championship. In the LPGA, Arpichaya Yubol leads the Portland Classic at 12 under, one ahead of Sophia Schubert and Pajaree Anannarukarn. In MLB, the Jays continue their home series against the New York Yankees, with Guerrero in concussion protocol. The CFL has the Toronto Argonauts visiting the Edmonton Elks and the Saskatchewan Roughriders meeting the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The NFL preseason offers seven games, including the Carolina Panthers at the Buffalo Bills and the Dallas Cowboys at the Seattle Seahawks. Thursday also brings the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton. Off the court, Josh Kushner and Bob Iger have agreed to buy the Los Angeles Lakers from Mark Walter at a record 12.5 billion dollar valuation, pending NBA approval.
