Swiatek rules Toronto!

This is The Sports Reset for Friday August 14th

In WTA tennis, Iga Swiatek won the National Bank Open, beating Elena Rybakina 6 2, 6 3 in a brisk straight-set final. Swiatek needed this response after Alexandra Eala ended her Wimbledon title defence in the third round last month, and she delivered it without dropping a set in the championship match. In MLB, the Jays were shut out 7 to 0 by the Boston Red Sox, while the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Minnesota Twins 7 to 1 at the Field of Dreams Game behind two Kyle Schwarber home runs into the corn. In the CFL, the BC Lions edged the Calgary Stampeders 30 to 26. In the NFL preseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers handled the Green Bay Packers 28 to 9 as rookie Drew Allar produced three touchdowns over his first three drives.

Looking ahead, the NFL preseason gives Atlanta Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa his first game action in the new offence against the Denver Broncos, with the starters expected to play at least one series. In MLB, the Jays host the New York Yankees, whose lineup ranks first in home runs while the pitching staff leads the majors in ERA. In PGA golf, Jordan Spieth reached five under with a birdie on 15, joining Michael Thorbjornsen and Kurt Kitayama atop the FedEx St. Jude Championship entering Friday’s second round, with the tournament finishing Sunday. In the CFL, the Ottawa Redblacks visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. On the LPGA Tour, Mariel Galdiano leads the Standard Portland Classic at seven under, one shot ahead of Bianca Pagdanganan and Hye-Jin Choi. Beyond the scoreboard, the NBA released its new schedule, opening Tuesday, October 20 with three games, including the defending champion New York Knicks hosting the Philadelphia 76ers and LeBron James.
