Jays win it late, Cubs edge Dodgers at Wrigley, NFL preseason opens in Canton ... and more for August 6th

Jays win it late!

This is The Sports Reset for Thursday August 6th

In MLB, the Toronto Blue Jays (The Jays) edged the Houston Astros 5 to 4 in 10 innings, with Ernie Clement delivering the late swing and Jesús Sánchez helping pull Toronto back after Houston built an early lead. Sánchez’s role is worth noting: he was added from Houston before the season as a left-handed bat with real power, and last night he gave the Jays exactly that kind of impact against his former club. Elsewhere, the Chicago Cubs clipped the Los Angeles Dodgers 7 to 6 at Wrigley Field, the New York Mets beat the Cleveland Guardians 6 to 5, and the Washington Nationals knocked off the Philadelphia Phillies 10 to 4. The Boston Red Sox blanked the Chicago White Sox 4 to 0, while the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 10 to 4.

Looking ahead, the NFL preseason opens with the Carolina Panthers against the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame Game, and the Canton backdrop gives it a little more weight than a normal exhibition: Larry Fitzgerald and Luke Kuechly are part of this year’s Hall class, with Drew Brees, Adam Vinatieri, and Roger Craig also going in on Saturday. In MLB, the Jays go straight to Wrigley for a makeup game against the Chicago Cubs, with Toronto trying to build off the extra-innings win while the Cubs come in with the stronger season profile and a 7-and-3 run over their last 10. In the CFL, the Calgary Stampeders visit the Toronto Argonauts after Vernon Adams Jr. threw six touchdowns and ran for another in their last meeting. In golf, the Wyndham Championship continues as the PGA Tour’s regular-season finale, with playoff positioning in play all week.
