Mets stop the slide, Astros beat The Jays, NFL preseason returns in Canton ... and more for August 5th
Mets stop the slide!
This is The Sports Reset for Wednesday August 5th
In MLB, the New York Mets beat the Cleveland Guardians 6 to 2, with Luis Torrens driving the night: three hits, a three-run homer in the second, and four RBIs as New York snapped a three-game losing streak. Sean Manaea gave the Mets six innings with seven strikeouts, and the Guardians left 11 runners on base, so Cleveland had traffic but not enough payoff. The Jays took the Canadian hit of the night, falling 7 to 2 to the Houston Astros at Daikin Park. Elsewhere, the Boston Red Sox put up a 14 to 2 win over the Chicago White Sox, the Detroit Tigers blanked the Seattle Mariners 8 to 0, and the San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9 to 4.
Looking ahead, The Jays get another shot at the Houston Astros today, and the matchup runs right back through Houston’s offence, with the Astros sitting first in the AL West and carrying one of the stronger run-scoring and slugging profiles on the board. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs are back at Wrigley Field after Chicago’s win yesterday, while the St. Louis Cardinals visit the New York Yankees again after New York’s 2 to 0 shutout. The week also brings the NFL back onto the calendar Thursday, with the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers opening the preseason in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, tied into an enshrinement weekend featuring Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Kuechly, Drew Brees, Roger Craig, and Adam Vinatieri.
