Golf takes centre stage, Thorbjornsen and Kuwaki win, Phillies blank Orioles, DC finals set ... and more for August 3rd
Golf takes centre stage!
This is The Sports Reset for Monday August 3rd
In golf, Michael Thorbjornsen won the Rocket Classic at 18 under, finishing two shots clear of Xander Schauffele and three ahead of Davis Riley. Shiho Kuwaki also closed the AIG Women's Open at 5 under, one shot better than Esther Henseleit and Yealimi Noh. In tennis, Kristina Liutova beat Darja Vidmanova in three sets at the Memphis Classic, and Laura Samson came back after dropping the first set to beat Kaitlin Quevedo at the Axeria Open. In MLB, the Philadelphia Phillies blanked the Baltimore Orioles 8 to 0, the St. Louis Cardinals cooled off the Toronto Blue Jays 5 to 1, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8 to 4.
Looking ahead, MLB has the Jays in Houston against the Astros, with Toronto trying to get a better offensive night from a group that has been near the bottom of the league in runs and OPS. The Los Angeles Dodgers visit the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, with the Dodgers carrying a first-place profile and the Cubs still sitting in the NL Central chase. The New York Yankees host the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Phillies are right back at it against the Washington Nationals. In tennis, the DC finals bring Taylor Fritz against Rafael Jodar on the ATP side, while Jessica Pegula meets Alexandra Eala for the WTA title.
