The Jays grind one out, Mets rout Braves behind Lindor, Yankees lose Bellinger ... and more for July 28th
The Jays grind one out!
This is The Sports Reset for Tuesday, July 28th.
In MLB, the Jays beat the Washington Nationals 3 to 2, and the best part was how they got there: Luis Urías homered, Myles Straw drove in two runs, and six Toronto relievers covered 6 1/3 innings after Max Scherzer’s emotional return to Washington ended in the third. Scherzer was back from the injured list on his 42nd birthday, got a standing ovation at Nationals Park, and left after a long strikeout battle with Daylen Lile. The New York Mets had the loudest score of the night, beating the Atlanta Braves 14 to 3 behind Francisco Lindor’s two homers, a triple, and six RBIs. The New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 9 to 5, the Chicago Cubs handled the St. Louis Cardinals 7 to 3, the Houston Astros edged the Los Angeles Angels 6 to 4, and the San Francisco Giants shut out the Milwaukee Brewers 3 to 0.
Looking ahead, the Jays stay in Washington tonight trying to turn one tight win into something steadier, with the bullpen coming off a heavy but sharp night and the offence still needing more than just timely damage. The Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds have a doubleheader at Great American Ball Park after Monday’s rainout, giving Cleveland two chances to stop a four-game slide. The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets run it back at Citi Field, with Chris Sale lined up against Christian Scott after Lindor’s big night changed the tone of the series opener. The Seattle Mariners visit the Los Angeles Dodgers in one of the better late games, with Los Angeles carrying one of baseball’s strongest records and a top-end run-prevention profile into the matchup. Beyond the scoreboard, the New York Yankees are dealing with another major injury after Cody Bellinger was ruled out four to six weeks with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, joining Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton on the injured list.
