The Jays keep sliding, Dodgers beat Phillies, Diamondbacks rout Athletics, 3M Open begins ... and more for July 23rd
The Jays keep sliding!
This is The Sports Reset for Thursday, July 23rd.
In MLB, the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Jays 4 to 2 at Rogers Centre. Griffin Jax gave Tampa Bay six innings of one-run ball, while Chandler Simpson, Victor Mesa, and Ben Williamson each drove in runs. That kept Toronto stuck in a rough stretch at exactly the wrong time, with the deadline pressure getting louder around the club. Elsewhere, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9 to 5, the Atlanta Braves edged the San Diego Padres 7 to 6, and the New York Yankees split a doubleheader with the Pittsburgh Pirates, dropping Game 1 by a 5 to 3 score before taking Game 2, 2 to 0. The Washington Nationals blanked the Colorado Rockies 8 to 0, and the Arizona Diamondbacks put up the loudest number of the night, beating the Athletics 15 to 5.
Looking ahead, the Jays get Tampa Bay again at Rogers Centre, and after Jax quieted the bats yesterday, Toronto needs a cleaner response at the plate to stop this series from turning into another missed chance. The San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves run it back after a one-run finish, the Minnesota Twins visit the Cleveland Guardians after Minnesota’s 10 to 6 win yesterday, and the Arizona Diamondbacks are back on the field against the St. Louis Cardinals in a makeup game.
In golf, the PGA Tour’s 3M Open starts with Mackenzie Hughes, Taylor Moore, and Max Greyserman all at even par, giving Hughes an early Canadian angle to track. On the LPGA side, the ISPS HANDA Women’s Scottish Open opens with Perrine Delacour, Nataliya Guseva, and Ryann O’Toole also at even par.
