Brewers sweep into World Series, Guardians take 2-1 ALCS lead, Sabres rally past Maple Leafs in overtime

Brewers sweep into World Series!

This is The Sports Reset for Friday October 16th

In the MLB playoffs, the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6 to 4 in Game 4, completed an NLCS sweep and won the National League pennant for the first time since 1982. Garrett Mitchell capped a four-run comeback with the go-ahead homer in the sixth, and Aaron Ashby retired Kiké Hernández for the final out. In the ALCS, the Cleveland Guardians edged the Tampa Bay Rays 3 to 2 in Game 3 for a 2-1 series lead; rookie Petey Halpin hit the go-ahead two-run homer, while Gavin Williams struck out nine over five innings. In the NHL, the Buffalo Sabres rallied past the Toronto Maple Leafs 5 to 4 in overtime, with Jack Quinn collecting four points and Owen Power scoring the winner. The Ottawa Senators beat the New York Islanders 2 to 1 in a shootout, the Florida Panthers topped the Vancouver Canucks 3 to 2 in overtime, the Utah Mammoth ended the Edmonton Oilers’ six-game point streak 4 to 2, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Winnipeg Jets 4 to 3 in overtime.

Looking ahead, the Guardians host the Rays in ALCS Game 4 tonight, carrying that 2-1 lead after Cleveland’s bullpen retired 16 of the final 17 Tampa Bay batters Thursday. Game 5 is scheduled for Saturday in Cleveland if needed. In the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Colorado Avalanche, where Sidney Crosby needs one assist to pass Joe Thornton for seventh all-time, while the Boston Bruins visit the Anaheim Ducks. In NBA preseason action, the Raptors visit the Detroit Pistons. Saturday brings the Carolina Hurricanes against the Jets. Beyond the scoreboard, Shohei Ohtani expects to pitch again in 2027 after knee and right biceps injuries kept him off the mound after July 3, though possible surgery remains under review.
