Mets start fast!

This is The Sports Reset for Friday, July 17th.

In MLB, the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 1 in the first big-league game after the All-Star break. Francisco Alvarez drove the night, homering twice, including the second half of back-to-back shots with Brett Baty in the seventh, while Christian Scott gave New York 5 and two-thirds scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. The Mets also got a late insurance double from A.J. Ewing, and Devin Williams closed it for his 100th career save.

Looking ahead, MLB gets busy again, and the headliner is the Los Angeles Dodgers at the New York Yankees, with Shohei Ohtani coming out of the break after knee treatment and that 300th career homer still fresh in the conversation. The Jays are back at Rogers Centre against the Chicago White Sox, with Spencer Miles lined up to open Toronto’s second half before Shane Bieber and Trey Yesavage follow in the weekend series. The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox also have a Fenway doubleheader, starting with the makeup of that May 9 game.

In golf, The Open continues with Matt Wallace, Pierceson Coody, and Daniel Brown all at 4 under, and Royal Birkdale stays in focus through Sunday as the final men’s major of the season. Off the court, the NBA is looking into the Milwaukee Bucks’ four-year, 64-million-dollar deal with Gary Trent Jr. amid questions about possible cap circumvention.
